Preparing for D.C.

Well, it's almost time! Tomorrow morning, my dad and I will be heading to the Arcata/Eureka airport (which is actually located in McKinleyville, interestingly enough!) to take a flight to L.A. From there, we'll be headed out to Washington D.C.!

This will be my first time on the East Coast, unless you count the time I landed at the Atlanta, Georgia airport on my way to Israel. =) In any case, I can tell you that I'm excited to see our nation's capital!

Now, I haven't yet explained why exactly I'm going to Washington D.C. with my dad. I could try to explain it to you, but I think this article will better answer your questions. It's a short piece, so I hope you don't mind taking a look at it--that way everything else I'm about to explain will make much more sense!

OK, now that you've read the article (hopefully!), Pvt. Robert L. Crane was my great-uncle (and my dad's uncle). Therefore, my dad was invited to go to the service, and he was allowed to bring one more person along (which is me!). Some of my other family members will be there; I haven't seen many of them in years. So it will be great to catch up with them!

While we'll only be in D.C. for a short time, we're also hoping to see some of the sights. I'm bringing my laptop with me, along with my camera, so I hope to share some of what we see and do with my readers!

It should be a memorable experience, and I'm happy to be able to share it with all of you! Thank you for taking the time to "travel" with me!

I really want to go to D.C. sometime in the future. What fun you and your dad get to go, that will be some fun memories. :) Are you going to check out the Smithsonian? That is what I really want to see.

Casey,

Yes, I think it will be really neat to go on this trip with my dad. :) I hope you get a chance to go sometime, too!

And we do plan on going to see the Smithsonian! My sister has been really into watching Night at the Museum 2, so she made sure to tell me to bring her back a souvenir from there. ;) Hopefully I'll be able to share some pictures with ya'll from the Smithsonian!

I've always wanted to go to DC! I really should go sometime since I only live about 3.5 hours away! It will be interesting to see that ceremony. It will probably be REALLY sad! I hope you have a nice time though and if you go to the Smithsonian be sure to take a pic of Mr. Rogers's sweater...he's from Pittsburgh ya know ;-)

XOXO~ Renee

Renee,

I know...I think the ceremony will be pretty intense. Especially being in Arlington Cemetery. But I think it's great that they're going to honor our fallen heroes!

Anyway, I hope you get a chance to go to DC sometime (wish you could come this week so I could meet you!), and I'll have to remember to look for Mr. Rogers' sweater. It will be my quest now! ;)

Wow -- that just gives me goosebumps. Definitely something stories are made of. You better take notes and start writing!!!!!!!

It's a wonderful opportunity on so many levels. I've always wanted to visit DC as well. So many galleries and museums that are first rate. The Holocaust Museum would be on my must see list.

Sorry to hear about your great uncle. Regardless of the circumstances in your relationship with him, I think that every person had someone that cared about them. So, when they die it's a sad thing. GREAT that they found the remains after all these years though...

I've been to DC a dew times. It's fun. Are you going to any of the monuments? Changing of the guards?

One of the times I was there was for a young leaders conference. I was one out of a few students from my state to go. It was scary for me because I was young, but as far as DC is concerned there's tons of things I won't forget. I know you'll love it!

Hope you have a fun, bonding time with your dad. I'm sure it'll be a great experience all around!

Kav,

Oh yes--I know! This is definitely an amazing opportunity, and it's incredible that they were able to find some of the remains!

I'm excited to see some of the sights, and thank you for your suggestion! :) I hope you get to go to DC someday, as well!

Hannah,

You are right, and it's a shame that the remains could not have been found sooner, so that those who were closer to my great uncle could have had that closure. But I agree that it is great they were able to find any remains at all!

Anyway, that's so cool that you got to go to DC for a young leaders conference! What an honor!

I'm definitely planning on going to the Smithsonian and seeing some of the other monuments and such--and I hope to post about it on here! :)

Thank you for your kind words! I'm looking forward to bonding with my dad and taking in the experience! :D

Lindsay,

Yes, it is quite exciting! ;) Thank you for your kindness, and I hope you get a chance to visit DC sometime, too! Although I confess, my first evening here has been a bit overwhelming. Maybe tomorrow (seeing the city in the light of day) will be a bit more...cheerful. ;)
