Review

Fate & Fortune (especially when followed up by its companion Kismet & Karma) is so fun! Reading the first part of this young-adult love story is like watching someone perform a magic trick... You know something's up, but you can't quite figure out how they pulled it all off. And you don't have to know the answers to enjoy the crazy, quirky, and entertaining ways Bryce and Paige are drawn together.

This is a fairly clean read in terms of content (minus making out), but this duology does include a fair amount of crude humor and innuendo. Also, as is probably clear from the title and description, there are references to fate, fortune telling, magic, and tarot cards. While all this is included with a rather light-hearted flair, if any such references bother you, this might not be the series for you.

But if you're looking for a high-school story filled with an endearing group of characters, their antics, and some romance, you'll find a lot to enjoy! The author has a very readable and engaging writing style, and I love the early setting of a small-town fair, as well as the odd but fun ways the romance plays out for the main characters. Fate & Fortune is a cute and entertaining YA read!

Review

As noted in the description, this story's pacing and puzzle of scenes probably won't be all that enjoyable unless you've read book one. But if you liked Fate & Fortune, then Kismet & Karma is a fun companion story! I believe it's best to read one right after the other.

As with book one, this book contains crude humor, innuendo, and perhaps (in some ways) a bit stronger emphasis on fate, which I feel a little saddened by. But the star attraction of the show is the characters—the crazy group of friends who all care so much about one another despite their snarky ways of interacting and their various personalities. While book one focused on Paige and Bryce, this book invites you to get to know the rest of the group and their own trials, dreams, and schemes.

I enjoyed this behind-the-scenes look at the plot of Fate & Fortune, as well as the complete conclusion you don't quite get in book one alone. There's a particular scene near the end (not quite the last) that's especially delightful in terms of setting, romance, and friendship. As part two of a clever duology, Kismet & Karma is a charmer!

My Review

After reading and thoroughly enjoying The Express Rider's Lady {you can read my review HERE}, I was definitely on board for another fun trip through the West with a Stacy Henrie book. While I didn't fall in love with this story quite as much, I still found it to be an entertaining ride!

Essie is quite the spontaneous soul, and a bit of suspension of disbelief is required to not question her choice of traveling with a gang of outlaws for the sake of book research. But I do like how Essie's interviews give the reader (and Essie herself) insight into the outlaws and their stories. It's a great reminder that we're all human. We all face challenges and make choices (right or wrong) that take us down the road we're on, for better or worse.

On the romance side, it's fun to watch Tate/Tex and Essie dance around each other, both mistrusting in turn and each fiercely determined to follow their own goals. Their journey includes moments of danger, threats to budding feelings, and a few twists. (Although I wouldn't have minded a little more speed, excitement, or romantic tension in the plot. But that might just be me being a little too picky after how much I remember enjoying The Express Rider's Lady!) The writing style is engaging, and this cast of characters makes for an interesting exploration of the "wild side" of the Old West.

My Review

This has to be one of the best Love Inspired books I've read to date. The Express Rider's Lady is just my type of story: a Western journey with a delightful mixture of humor, peril, and tender romance. I truly enjoyed the adventure!

I quite adored the hero, Myles. So, he's a bit brooding, let's be honest (is that a bad thing?)—but he's the kind of guy who's completely devoted to his friends and those in his care. There's this scene where it's been raining like crazy, and Delsie's health is at stake, and...well, I won't spoil the preciousness of the scene, but I'm utterly and completely a sucker for heroes with protective instincts as wide and fierce as the Wild West. *happy sigh*

I also really liked Delsie and their companion for the ride, Amos (a sweet older man who makes a great chaperone). The one main issue I had with the book was the ending. Not that the outcome isn't pleasing, but just that the effort to get there felt a little more dragged out than I'd prefer.

For a somewhat quick but very satisfying trip along the rugged routes of the Pony Express riders, complete with a romance that's as stirring as it is fun, let me introduce you to The Express Rider's Lady.

Too bad she couldn't have foreseen the tumultuous arrival of Travis Lockwood, everybody's favorite star NFL quarterback. Make that former star NFL quarterback. Sidelined back to Texas after an injury, the golden boy is trying to steal her precious on-air time. Summer is reduced to reporting from…football games. It's enough to make her quit and become a storm-chaser like her parents. She's stuck with a career that's going nowhere and a man who delights in her refusal to be charmed. Falling in love isn't nearly as easy as predicting the weather.

My Review

You don't have to be a fan of football to get a kick out of this story of weather-girl-meets-former-football-star! (Note the word "former.") I appreciate that The Weather Girl is accessible to those of us with little knowledge about the sport, and, indeed, it's more about finding hope when single-minded ambitions are unexpectedly crushed and reconciling your dreams with your responsibilities/other desires. I'd venture to say that this book is a gem for those in the NA (new adult) crowd as well as the adults, as it deals with issues I could very much relate to.

While there was a tad bit of subtle head-hopping on occasion (seeing the story through multiple characters' views in one scene without breaks), a little (mild) swearing, and a good deal of introspection, this was a very fun and engaging read. There's some suspense, although the main focus is on the developing romance. I loved Summer's nervous habit, and how Travis reacts to it! And in the background, Summer's grandparents provide the sunshine and her coworkers provide the rain (though not exclusively). The balance of family/work scenes with the blossoming romance scenes is great.

With clever characterization, relevant conflicts, and an ending that is adorable and absolutely perfect for the story, The Weather Girl is a sunny read for a rainy day. Harlequin Heartwarming at its finest!

A Seasons-Themed Interview with Amy

 Amber: Hi, Amy! Welcome to "Seasons of Humility" - glad to have you here. :) Tell us, what is your favorite season? And what would your heroine's favorite season be? (Could be cliché, but you never know! *wink*) 

Amy: Hello! Thank you so much for hosting me here today :)

I would have to say my favorite season is the one we are in right now - SPRING! Now, you might think Summer would favor her namesake, but I think she would love spring like me. Especially in Texas because March-May is tornado season in the south. She would love it for the volatility of the weather, of course!

Amber: That definitely sounds like it would be up Summer's alley - her "Tornado Alley," perhaps? (Lame joke - sorry!) 

Moving on... Do you find spring weather rejuvenating, or more something to endure? 

Amy: I love spring and the way the world comes to life after the long, cold winter here in Chicago. I love seeing the trees turn green and the flowers blooming, so I can deal with the rain here and there. All three of my kids were born in May, so it really does symbolize new life for me!

Amber: Aww, that's awesome! Which season do you find the most romantic? Would your book's hero agree? 

Amy: Oh, this is a tough one. I guess I think fall is pretty romantic here in the Midwest. When the leaves turn colors and the weather gets a little chilly, perfect for cuddling. This might not be the same answer you'd get from Travis. Fall means football, and football isn't too romantic. And let's not forget, Travis loves ... Summer! ;)

Amber: LOL! Love it! 

What advice would you give to someone who feels "stuck" in a less hopeful season of a career they love, like Summer's situation?

Amy: Summer loves everything about the weather, but sort of settled for a career that kept her close to family rather than one that let her really follow her dreams. I think Summer's grandparents gave her the best advice - sometimes you just have to go after the things you want and trust that everything will work out. You gain nothing and potentially lose what you want the most if you don't at least give your dreams a try. I have to say that advice worked for me. I never imagined being a published author and I still wouldn't be if I hadn't taken the risk and enter a contest that got Harlequin's attention! You never know what can happen if you put yourself out there - go for it!

Amber: Great thoughts! So what's next in this season of your writing/publishing career?

Amy: I have so many exciting things coming up. I am in the middle of the editing process for my second book with Harlequin Heartwarming (the first of three in a new series). It's titled THE BETTER MAN and I cannot wait to get it out there and in the hands of all our awesome Heartwarming readers. After I finish all three of these books, there's no telling what's in store for me. I have so many ideas swirling in my head, the sky's the limit!
