Sunday by the Sea: A Whale's Tale

Not that long ago I saw a whale.

And no, I wasn't out on the ocean.

I was actually by the Klamath River in Northern California. Now, I don't know much about how the whale is doing, how she got to be there, and what's going to happen to her. I can tell you that she's a gray whale, and that her calf has already gone back out to sea. Hopefully sometime soon she (the mother) will be able to return to the sea, as well. But to have the experience of seeing a whale in a river - well, I just had to share it with you!

Nope, that's not just a big fish! That's a whale in the Klamath River!

Here's a closer look at the whale as she's swimming below the bridge.

My mom, sister, and I (not pictured) joined the crowd on the bridge and watched the whale swim around the river. Every time she crossed under the bridge, the crowd would cross to the other side of the bridge, too. Not exactly the safest thing to do on a highway... But it was a rather uncommon sight, for sure!

(I also took a video with my camera, but unfortunately it was taking forever to load for this post, so I gave up. It wasn't the best quality, but you could see the whale spouting a couple of times, which was cool!)

Of all the places to go whale watching, we saw one in a river! Such a grand creature... And just a small glimpse of all God has created. As the Lord asked Job:

"Hast thou entered into the springs of the sea? or hast thou walked in the search of the depth?....

Who hath divided a water-course for the overflowing of waters, or a way for the lightning of thunder; to cause it to rain on the earth, where no man is; on the wilderness, wherein there is no man; to satisfy the desolate and waste ground; and to cause the bud of the tender herb to spring forth?....

Who hath put wisdom in the inward parts? or who hath given understanding to the heart?"

~ Job 38:16, 25-27, 36

Mother Whale

Think of the whale
as a pioneer
an explorer
seeking new frontiers
the very spirit of mutation
often failing
but sometimes
life affirming
specie renewing
opening not just new frontiers
but a new life forms
Mother whale
What are you seeking?
Will you know it
when you find it?

I guess you post just moved me.

Vince,

Very nice and thought-provoking! :) I like the new perspective you add to this, as the news gives a more negative take because they're not sure how long she can survive in the river... :(

Anyway, I'm glad this post moved you, and thanks for stopping by!

Wow Vince, that was beautiful! Amber thanks for sharing this story and those pictures. I'm worried about Mama Whale though. Will you keep us posted on her progress? I'm praying that she makes her way back to the ocean.

Kav,

I agree! :)

And you're welcome! I think a lot of people are worried about her - she doesn't really have a good food supply where she is, and they're not sure if she's already ill or if there's some other reason why she's in the river.

If I don't post about her again, I'll try my best to remember to let you know if I hear anything about her! I pray that she finds her way back to the ocean, as well.

Thank you for sharing this here, Amber. I recently saw this on the news, as well. Like you, I pray that she finds her way back to the ocean soon.

Happy Monday to you!

Michelle,

No problem! I think in today's newspaper it noted that she's still in the same location and that people should not try to interact with her... Hopefully there will be better news soon!

Happy Monday to you, too! :)
