The King's Scrolls Blog Tour: Interview + Giveaway!

The epic series continues! Hard to believe that it's been almost a year (still a few months left to go) since I had the pleasure of hosting the cover reveal and blog tour for Resistance, Book 1 in the Ilyon Chronicles series by Jaye L. Knight. Such exciting times! Book 2 has just released today, and I've got Jaye here with the scoop on cover symbolism, dragons, and what's coming next...

* * *

Amber: Welcome, Jaye! So exciting to see the Ilyon Chronicles series continue. What can readers expect with Book 2? Does it have a different tone/feel than Book 1?

Jaye: Thank you so much for having me, Amber! I can’t believe I’m releasing Book 2 already! It feels like I just did this, but yes, it’s incredibly exciting! The majority of Book 1 took place in either the city of Valcré or out at the resistance’s camp. In Book 2 readers will get to explore a bit more of Ilyon. The King’s Scrolls also focuses heavily on Kyrin, my female protagonist, and features a lot more of her family than readers got to see in Resistance. I had a lot of fun with all the family interaction. Some really fun new characters were also introduced in this book, including a few characters from the crete race. I loved being able to bring them in. They are probably my favorite of all my Ilyon races.

I think the tone of the book is a bit sadder than Resistance. And it takes place in late fall/early winter, and that gives it a different feel and fits in well with the theme of the story. In this chapter of the series, the characters really have to learn how to trust God even when things seem to be going horribly wrong. I’d say the theme verse for The King’s Scrolls is Isaiah 55:8-9, “For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways,” declares the Lord. “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways and My thoughts than your thoughts.”

Amber: We’ve gone from a sword to a quill in these first two covers of the series—a case of “the pen is mightier than the sword,” perhaps? :) What would your main characters in The King’s Scrolls think of that saying?

Jaye: I think that is a fitting description. :) As for what my characters would think, I guess that depends on the characters. Timothy, one of the new characters introduced in this book, would definitely agree. I think Kyrin would agree too. Kaden? Not so much. Lol!

Amber: Do you prefer to type or write by hand when working on the first draft of your stories?

Jaye: For years, the only way I could get anything written was by hand. I just couldn’t concentrate when I tried to work on the computer. A case of too many distractions most of the time. But then, this last summer, I bought a Microsoft Surface, something I had been wanting for quite a while since it came with a full version of Word. That little tablet completely changed everything. I started working on Book 4 of Ilyon Chronicles with it and wrote the majority of the book that way. Now that is the only way I write. I still, oddly, can’t concentrate when I’m on my desktop computer, but I can get a lot of work done on my Surface. Even though I sometimes miss my blue binder and blue pencils, I can get a lot more writing done faster by typing, so I’m really happy I decided to splurge a little and buy a Surface.

Amber: Based on the blurb for this story, it appears that Book 2 includes…dragons! Are we talking Toothless (How to Train Your Dragon), Smaug (The Hobbit), or something else entirely? Friend or foe?

Jaye: Yes! Dragons! That’s another thing I loved so much about writing this book. They’re definitely more of a Toothless dragon than Smaug. This picture on Pinterest is the best I have as far as how I picture them. They’re definitely not the really spiky dragons you see so often in fantasy art. And, unless you happen to be an enemy, they are very friendly. They’re almost cat-like, actually, and can be very affectionate with their riders.

Amber: Those sound like my kinds of dragons. ;)

This is just the second of a six-book series. Any hints as to what’s coming next—and when?

Jaye: Well, I do plan to start editing book three as soon as I can, though once the tour is over, I want to devote time to getting a lot of book 5 written. It’s kind of been pushed aside lately. I would like to release book three as soon as I can, though. I consider it the book everyone’s been waiting for. It answers a lot of questions readers have, particularly about a certain beloved character. *cough*Jace*cough* So I’m quite anxious to share it. Will it be this year? Ideally, yes, but I have no idea. It depends on how editing goes. I also happen to be working on a little secret project on the side. I had no idea this story was going to take shape the way it did and that I would be working on it now, but it just demanded to be written. I hope to share the details soon now that The King’s Scrolls has been released and it won’t take away from that.

Amber: Such wonderful things to look forward to! Can't wait to hear more. Thank you for joining us today, Jaye!

About the Book

Following the harrowing events that brought them to Landale Forest, Jace and Kyrin have settled comfortably into their new lives and the mission of protecting those under the emperor’s persecution. The fast approach of winter brings with it the anticipation of a quiet few months ahead. That is until the arrival of four mysterious, dragon-riding cretes who seek aid in a mission of great importance—not only to their own people, but to all followers of Elôm.

Hidden in the vast mining valley north of Valcré, a faithful crete has spent years sharing his knowledge with the destitute miners and their families and is known to possess what may be Arcacia’s last surviving copies of the King’s Scrolls—the Word of Elôm. Joining the cretes, those in Landale must find the crete teacher and bring him to safety, but it is a race against time. Should Daican’s men find him first, execution and the destruction of the Scrolls is certain.

When disaster strikes, all seems lost. Could Elôm have a plan even in the enemy’s triumph?

The book should be releasing in early 2015. Here's the blurb:

And here's the cover!

My Thoughts

Jaye has some awesome branding going on with this series, and I love how clear it is through the covers that the books go together. (Click HERE to see Book 1 on Goodreads.) The images on this cover fit hand in hand with the title, and there's a definite sense of mystery in the darkness beyond the quill and even in the blank scroll. It says, "There's a story waiting to be written. Open the pages to discover it." :) Nicely done! And how fun is it that one of the giveaway prizes so perfectly matches the quill on the cover? Be sure to keep on reading to learn more about that...

Excerpt from The King's Scrolls

The other younger crete took a swig of his coffee and set his eyes past her. Kyrin peeked over her shoulder at Kaden who, of course, was staring at the dragon. The female creature stared back in mutual interest.

“Go ahead,” the crete said suddenly. “You can touch her. She loves attention, and she’ll only attack if I tell her to.” A sly glint sparkled in his spring-green eyes.

Besides Jace, Kyrin had never seen anyone with such bright and colorful eyes as these cretes.

Kaden looked at him, his brows rising. “You can do that?”

The crete nodded. “Dragons are highly intelligent. You can teach them almost any command. Storm here is young, but she learns fast.”

Kyrin smiled at the delight in her brother’s eyes as he stepped closer to the dragon and ran his hand over her bluish-gray neck scales. A grin split his face.

“She’s so smooth. Kyrin, come and feel it.”

Kyrin stepped to his side and laid her hand on the dragon. The scales were indeed very smooth, reminding her of the polished marble stair-railings in Auréa Palace, but they weren’t cold. Warmth radiated through them. The dragon, still watching them, let out a little rumble, almost like a giant cat’s purr.

“I told you she liked attention,” the crete said, grinning.

Kyrin chuckled and glanced at Jace to see if he wanted to touch the dragon, but he made no move to come closer. This certainly had more to do with the crete than the dragon. He was very fond of any type of animal. She faced the crete again.

“So they can breathe fire?”

“For short bursts, but that’s usually all it takes to deter any threat.”

“That’s incredible,” Kaden breathed. While he continued admiring Storm, Kyrin observed the dragon’s rider. He appeared to be in his early to mid-twenties—about ten years younger than Captain Darq—though his exact age was impossible to guess. Cretes were said to mature faster than humans, so he could be anywhere from seventeen to twenty-five. He too wore a sleeveless jerkin. Brown tattoos, a little darker than his skin, marked both shoulders. Darq and the other cretes had them as well, but Kyrin hadn’t taken a good look at them until now. This man’s were a complicated pattern of spirals and dots, but the shape of a fox stood out in the center of his right shoulder. Though she tried to be discreet, he must have caught her studying him and suddenly extended his hand to her. “I’m Talas, by the way. Talas Folkan of the Fox Clan.”

Fun and Games for the Resistance Blog Tour!

May I just say that this Resistance blog tour has been quite epic? Not only because of the awesome book we're featuring, but also because of all the awesome bloggers helping Jaye and I to promote it. I'm seriously loving the enthusiasm! As proofreader and publicist, I've been given a special glimpse into Jaye's efforts in publishing this story, and her skill and perseverance are quite impressive! Just take a look at the array of reviews popping up to see how that's paying off for this author. =)

Now, the question on readers' minds after finishing Resistance is...where is Book 2?? I'm happy to join Jaye in announcing the title for Book 2, which should be releasing in 2015:

When a mysterious group of dragon-riding cretes arrive at camp, those in Landale must join their mission to rescue a teacher of Elôm and the last known copies of the King’s Scrolls before the emperor’s men can locate them.

Aaaaand the epic-ness continues! Dragons, an introduction to a new race, a daring and important quest - Jaye's got you covered, fantasy fans. ;)

Jaye goes into more detail about what's to come on her Ilyon Chronicles series blog, so be sure to head on over there to learn more. The note that I found especially interesting (in its connections with the themes of this blog) is that Book 2 takes place in late fall/early winter, and the colder weather sets the tone for the story. I wonder if that might signal a time of "letting go" for the characters - of "dying" to certain dreams and desires and staying strong as they await a season of renewal. We shall see...

Let's talk a bit more about the series characters we already know. A lot of readers have expressed their love for Jace, and I'll admit that he's a favorite of mine, as well! But there's quite a large cast of characters. Many have very admirable characteristics and personalities.

If you've read the book (or heard about some of the characters via the reviews), have you wondered which one you're most like? Well, wonder no more! Jaye has put together a fun personality quiz so you can discover which Resistance character you resemble. =)

Apparently, I'm Kyrin, which means that I'm rather quiet, but I hold family and friends dear. I also have a good sense of self and what I believe - and I'm not afraid to stand up for that. Kyrin's faith is quite admirable, so I can't complain! I'd love to live up to that sort of personality description.

What about you? Which Resistance character did you get? Let's chat about it in the comments section! And do share your thoughts on the title/logline of Book 2!

P.S. The blog tour continues today and tomorrow, so don't forget to get your entries in for the tour-wide giveaway by Tuesday night! Also, there have been a few tweaks to the schedule since my introduction post, so please be sure to check out the blog tour page. I'm keeping it updated with direct links - you won't want to miss any of the great reviews, interviews, or spotlights!

Resistance: An Epic Fantasy Cover Reveal

Welcome to the world of Ilyon - the setting for Jaye L. Knight's new NA (New Adult) Christian fantasy series! The story begins with Resistance, the first of six epic, adventure-filled books:

“Don’t you know? Animals like you have no soul.”

Could God ever love a half-blood all of society looks upon with such fear and disdain? Jace once believed so, but when a tragic loss shatters the only peace he’s ever known, his faith crumbles as the nagging doubts he’s tried to put behind him descend on his grieving heart. With them come the haunting memories of the bloodstained past he longs to forget, but can never escape.

Taken from home at a young age and raised to serve the emperor, Kyrin Altair and her twin brother live every day under a dangerous pretense of loyalty. After her unique observation skills and perfect memory place her into direct service to the emperor, Kyrin finds herself in further jeopardy as it becomes increasingly difficult to hide her belief in Elôm, the one true God.

Following the emperor’s declaration to enforce the worship of false gods under the penalty of death, many lives are endangered. But there are those willing to risk everything to take a stand and offer aid to the persecuted. With their lives traveling paths they never could have imagined, Jace and Kyrin must fight to overcome their own fears and conflicts with society as they become part of the resistance.

Intrigued yet? Check out the cover...

My Thoughts

This cover sets me up for something legendary. From the torn scroll border at the top, to the light shining down on the beautifully detailed sword waiting to be pulled from its resting place by its rightful master, the cover quietly but emphatically states that an adventure awaits. The important details are clear: the series name (showing that this is only the beginning), the title in tall caps, and the author's very fitting pseudonym boldly standing out in the darkness. My favorite aspect, though? That would be the gorgeous background. It brings to mind childhood stories and imaginative games in the woods. It's both ominous in what's hidden and optimistic with the brilliant green and the shining light. I want to walk right into those woods and discover their secrets!
