Top Ten (or Four) Tuesday: Reread-worthy Romances

Today's topic is a "Love Freebie" for Valentine's week, so I thought I'd feature a few of the romances I adore. I guess I'm actually partially borrowing a topic from later this month ("Books I Could Reread Forever"), but hopefully that's all right!

These romances aren't for everyone—a lot depends on personal preference. But these are ones that swept me away, and I found them worth enjoying more than once. :)

The Redemption by MaryLu Tyndall

This whole series is so engaging, especially for Pirates of the Caribbean fans! It's also lovely that Edmund and Charlisse's story continues through more than one book. Danger and love on the high seas? Check and check!

Cruel Beauty by Rosamund Hodge

This fantasy novel is fascinating, as is the relationship between Nyx and Ignifex. It's a crazy journey, but layered with so much meaning and hope and passion amid the darkness. (That darker and somewhat strange/creepy nature of the book does make me hesitant to recommend this to everyone.)

Recalled by Cambria Hebert

This is another book I'm hesitant to recommend to everyone, given the premise of the boy on a mission to assassinate the girl (basically the same as Cruel Beauty, but reversed). Yet, the tension and Dex's path to falling in love are enthralling. It's funny how a book that has such a dark plot can be so sweet and touching. (As a side note, while I don't think it's the best idea to go too deep in analyzing the book's theology, there are some really powerful points and scenes in this story!)

Daddy-Long-Legs by Jean Webster

This has got to be one of the sweetest stories ever! An epistolary novel about a girl spreading her wings...and finding love. A classic I can recommend to pretty much anyone. :) It's so cute and comforting and meaningful!

I'd love to know...
What are your favorite romance books?
The ones that make you smile or cry or melt?

Top Ten Tuesday: My Fictional Crushes

So...it's nearly 11:00 on a Tuesday night as I'm beginning this post, but when I saw this week's theme for The Broke and the Bookish's Top Ten Tuesday feature, I couldn't resist jumping in! I have some pretty awesome fictional crushes, if I do say so myself.

But seriously, it's kind of fun to pick favorites, isn't it? It feels like you're learning something new about yourself while getting some training in being decisive.

All that to say, below are some of my fave fictional crushes. I'll try to avoid too many spoilers, but be warned that it's hard to gush without providing a bit of context. ;)

From the Screen:

This crush goes back about ten years or so. Oh my goodness, how I fell in love with Harry as a teenager! Funny thing is, he's really not in that many scenes of the movie (at least, not as many scenes as I'd wish him to be!), but he doesn't need much time to charm a girl.

Harry is a drifter - a hobo - during the Great Depression. A guy who rides the rails and looks out for himself. Until Natty shows up in his life. He puts on a great show of being burdened by Natty's presence, but it's very obviously an act by a lonely guy who can't help but take Natty under his wing and watch out for her.

(Harry is played by a young John Cusack. I really don't need to say more, do I?)

2. Gus Pike from the Road to Avonlea series

This crush goes back even farther than my crush on Harry. I grew up watching the Road to Avonlea series with my grandparents and uncle, and Gus Pike's character intrigued and enchanted me. You will find echoes of his fiddle-playing, adventure-loving, gentlemanly ways in one of my own historical characters (Myghal). :)

3. Henry Tilney from Northanger Abbey

I suppose this character could go under the book section, as well...I'll have to see how I feel after a re-read of the book. I confess that the version of Henry Tilney I truly fell in love with is the one played by JJ Feild. It's the smile! And the teasing! And the amazing way he balances maturity and a completely endearing sense of humor.

4. Prince Naveen from The Princess and the Frog

While the Beast (from Beauty and the Beast) will always hold a special place in my heart, more and more I feel like Naveen might just be my favorite Disney prince. I just watched the movie again tonight (Mardi Gras and all that jazz!), and goodness, for an animated frog, he gets the sweetest, most tender expressions! I LOVE the way he grows in the movie and demonstrates his love for Tiana. Their relationship is funny, adorable, and allows them both to gain new perspective and remember what's really important in life. And that last scene of the movie?? It's just perfect.

5. Guy from The Croods

Guy is quirky. And hilarious. He's a "smart guy" with huge dreams and hope for the future. While he doesn't always have a choice about hanging out with Eep's family (*wink*), he has a big, loyal heart. I love the way he fits in with the Croods. I love his tenacity and his admiration for Eep. (Their relationship is so precious!) And Guy can tell a simple story in a way that will leave you spellbound.

From the Page:

6. Jervis from Daddy-Long-Legs by Jean Webster

To say too much about Jervis would ruin the story for those of you who haven't read it. (Why haven't you read it yet??) But sometimes it's what someone doesn't say...or what they do in secret...that make their character and feelings so darling and obvious.

(I should add that this one could also fit under the first half of the list, because the live musical production that aired a while back was totally wonderful!)

7. Dexter from Recalled by Cambria Hebert

This might seem like an odd choice if you only know the premise of the book, or even the majority of the plot leading up to the end. Despite Dexter's assassination assignment, he completely stole my heart. I think it's the way he wrestles with himself...how he fights so hard and can't seem to shake the deeper desire to do the right thing. As often as he finds himself trying to take the easy way, he realizes his error. I don't know - his story probably isn't for everyone, but he won me over with his protective ways and ultimate decisions.

8. Jacin from Winter by Marissa Meyer

OK, this is such a tough one, guys!! It's between Jacin and Wolf for me...and I feel like I need to re-read the whole series before I make a final, final decision. ;) They both are terribly, wonderfully swoon-worthy! I guess, right now, I'm just thinking about the sweet relationship between Jacin and Winter, the guard and the princess. His love for her is so tender. *heart melts* But Wolf and Scarlet...oh, I do so love them, too!

9. Pono from Songstone by Lena Goldfinch

Lena's fictional heroes totally deserve a spot on this list - and it's hard to pick just the right one, since they're all so dear! I will freely admit to some bias, given my friendship with Lena and my work in editing for her. But in that case, I should also note that it was because of how much I loved her novella The Language of Souls that I started beta reading for her and discovered the beginnings of a beautiful friendship. :) So, I was totally a fan before anything else!

Anyway, back to Pono... He's brave. He's total hero-quality in the ways he sacrifices and stands up for Kita. Pono left an impression on my reader heart, and I think I'm due for a re-read soon so I can remember all the details of why I love him so much. Mostly, I just know that I do. ♥

Bonus!

A romantic fictional moment that caused me to burst into tears.

Since the overall theme of this week's Top Ten Tuesday is Valentine's Day, I feel like this is a good place/time to mention a scene from a favorite show that affected me in an unexpected way. Curious yet? ;)

The show is Signed, Sealed, Delivered. The particular episode (movie, really) is From Paris with Love.

(If you haven't seen it yet, this is definitely a spoiler. So please do skip over this, in that case!)

* * *

This show inspires me, encourages me, and reminds me to have a broader, hopeful perspective on life. It makes me laugh and cry.

And with this scene, it literally made me burst into tears.

Norman and Rita are the sweetest characters. They're also extremely shy, and throughout all the episodes I'd seen up to this point, they danced around their obvious affection for each other in a still-satisfying but open-ended way.

Until I got to the end of From Paris with Love. I was home for the holidays (a little over a month ago), and my family ended up joining me on the couch for at least part of the movie, which I had very happily caught on Hallmark channel. (Squealing might have been involved when I realized I could finally see this movie!) In the scene, their friend and coworker Shane just said goodbye, and Rita is trying to explain to Norman why Shane can't stay. (It's a matter of the heart involving another coworker.)

Suddenly, the truth finally comes out. I guess I just didn't think it would actually happen, but they did it. Norman and Rita admitted their feelings for each other. They even kissed! And I think I missed a good deal of that kiss because as soon as it happened, I literally burst into tears. It wasn't like the happy little tear rolling down the cheek. It was like an outpouring of relief and unanticipated joy. :'-) (My poor family probably didn't know what to do with me, haha.)

I'm not sure if I was just extra emotional that day or what, but I think I'm just really invested in these characters. I surprised myself when I realized just how much I cared about them and how much I wanted to see them be open with each other.

* * *

So that's my random romance-related anecdote. ;)

I'd love to hear if you've ever burst into tears because you were so happy for fictional characters! And/or I'd love to know about some of your favorite fictional crushes.

Happy Wednesday!

Sweetly Seasoned Snack Size Reviews

What's a girl to do as Valentine's Day approaches? Well, for me, I guess that would be doing what I do the rest of the year: read a romance (or a dozen). ;) Here are a few sweet romance stories I've enjoyed recently!

So True a Love (Daughters of His Kingdom, Book 2) by Amber Lynn Perry
Rating: Spring/Summer
Currently $3.99 for Kindle

As an inspirational historical romance fan, I was hard-pressed to pass up this lovely cover and the story's promising premise! And the book delivered on an intriguing, suspenseful read set during the Revolutionary era. I do confess that the plot is rather frustrating in terms of secrets kept and the obvious overlooked time and again, but it wasn't so bothersome that I couldn't appreciate the romantic tension and the hope that all would be revealed and worked out in time. An engaging excursion into another era!

* * *

The Vow (An Uncertain Choice Novella) by Jody Hedlund
Rating: Fall/Spring
Currently $1.99 for Kindle

It's exciting that talented historical fiction author Jody Hedlund is trying her hand at YA (young adult) fiction! I enjoyed this snippet as a sample of her upcoming novel release. The time period is fraught with peril and hardships, and poor Rosemarie has to deal with a lot of trauma for a young woman barely out of girlhood. As the set-up for An Uncertain Choice that provides interesting back story, The Vow is a nice teaser; as its own novella, there isn't much of a story so much as a promise of one to come. Lots of shifting emotions (understandably!), but not much substance that's overly compelling or satisfying in and of itself. I'll be curious to see how the novel plays out, though!

A Woodland Miracle (Amish Wonders, Book 2) by Ruth Reid
Rating: Spring/Summer
Currently $8.89 for Kindle

It's really hard to stay away from the book section when I'm in Walmart. The last time I browsed the shelves, my eyes caught on an Amish book with a cover I simply love and by an author who wrote another Amish story I enjoyed. But my gaze also snagged on this one, and the back cover copy completely intrigued me. ("Endanger their lives"? I had to know what that was all about!) Well, I bought the former because I trusted the author would deliver a good story (and yes, I'm a sucker for lovely covers), but I couldn't resist looking up this book online. After seeing the reviews and reading more about it, I one-clicked it.

A Woodland Miracle was all its back cover said it would be and just what I wanted! Unique Amish characters and setting (which has to be getting pretty rare in this genre), plenty of tension, and a suspense element that didn't wait until the very end to make itself well and clearly known (kudos to the author for that!). Yes, I think some of the characters and themes could have gone a smidge deeper, but all in all this was a very satisfying and intriguing read that kept me glued to my Fire tablet until the very last swipe of the virtual page.

[This snack size review is bordering on a full meal...thanks for indulging me!]

Love on the Mend (Full Steam Ahead Novella) by Karen Witemeyer
Rating: Spring
Currently $2.51 for Kindle

Karen Witemeyer writes so cleverly and crafts such fun and likable characters that reading any of her stories is bound to be an enjoyable experience. Though just a short and sweet novella, Love on the Mend is trademark Witemeyer and includes some great bonding scenes and a satisfying conclusion. While perhaps not my favorite of her books, it was still fun to spend an evening catching up with Jacob from Full Steam Ahead and watching him get completely bowled over by the indomitable Mollie Tate. ;)

Have you read any sweet romances lately that you'd recommend? What's on your Valentine's reading list?

"Seasoned" or "unseasoned" is in reference to my book rating system. Thanks to Juju of Tales of Whimsy for the inspiration regarding mini reviews!

Apple Blossom!

Congratulations! Be sure to check your inbox for my e-mail!

And now, for today's post about sacrificial love...

As those who have been following my blog for a while know, Mondays are special days here at "Seasons of Humility." I have a weekly feature called Mondays for the Military (which doesn't always happen every week, but it still happens often!). Today I want to combine my respect and admiration for the military with this last day of the Valentine's progressive blog party.

I recently received a forwarded message from a pen pal I met through the Cup of Joe for a Joe program, a First Lieutenant in the Air Force over in Iraq right now. The message was from his Brigadier General, Anthony J. Rock. I'd like to share some of it here with you. (I was given the OK to share this.) But just to warn you--I cried the first time I read it!

Many back home who have not had the calling or chance to serve don't understand why we do what we do. To help them get it, I like to tell them there are three kinds of people in this world: Sheep, wolves and sheepdogs. The wolves would attack the sheep while they graze and the sheepdog's only mission is to make sure the wolves are held at bay. Now the sheep don't want to acknowledge the presence of or even know about the sheepdog, they just want to keep their heads down while they graze the very green and tasty grass. They presume they will be safe from the wolves and some would even tell you the wolves don't exist or they mean us no harm. We, as sheepdogs, know better because we have seen what happens when the flock goes unguarded.

We lost 2977 lives on 11 Sep 01 in the opening salvo of a new kind of war and we have lost 4436 sheepdog lives in Iraq alone since then. We are SHEEPDOG NATION and we will stand strong to protect our brothers and sisters, sons and daughters, mothers and fathers, friends and strangers alike--all those back home who rely on us, even if they don't know we are out here for them. Orwell got it right when he said, "Citizens sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do ill will on their behalf." This weekend is the perfect example. Over 100,000 sheep will gather in a big round building in Dallas to watch the green and gold team smash heads against the black and gold team on the very green grass. They can only do so confident in their security because of you. So, when you someday meet one of the sheep who thanks you for your protection, and you will, you will very modestly mumble, "you're welcome, it's just what we do..." But you know there is more to it than that.

This is a historic year. Our presence in Iraq will change from a massive military footprint focused on combat and combat support to a very lean effort focused on Security Cooperation, largely training, exercises and military sales that will enable Iraq's ability to conduct its own internal security and external defense operations. It represents our lasting commitment to a strategic partnership for the future. Iraq is still going through the turbulent transition to a democratic system and that is simultaneously unsettling and threatening to some and an exciting new opportunity for others. Much of what we do now is not "ill will" but rather good will. We are executing the Building Partner Capacity strategy that is a part of the new operational environment. With that said, we are warriors at heart and are ready to act in defense of our brother warriors here with us and citizens back home alike. So my message is, stay strong, stay ready for combat and stay focused. Take care of yourselves and take care of your wingmen. Execute with the professionalism, dedication and excellence that is our trademark. Never forget that the role you have taken on as a sheepdog comes with awesome responsibility, exceptional personal satisfaction, and all too often little thanks. That's OK, we don't do it for the recognition anyway.

To our newest members, welcome aboard and get ready to rage. For the rest of you, thanks for what you do every day. As always I hope this message finds those you love back home safe and warm. I ask you tell them one thing for me, "Brig Gen Rock says thanks to you as family members for your sacrifice during the absence of your sheepdog. Your sacrifice is much greater than ours and it is often forgotten, but Brig Gen Rock knows and appreciates it." I am proud to be a small part of your team. While I acknowledge the passing of the first month I refuse to count the days, I prefer to make every day count. I know you will make them count with me.

Oh, I'm so grateful for these "sheepdogs" who are sacrificing so much for the country they love! Let's not let these brave heroes and their sacrifices become forgotten. There are ways we can show our love and care for our military men and women.

One way is to pray--which is no small thing! I was recently reminded by a dear friend, KC Frantzen, about an upcoming Wounded Warrior Getaway. (Click HERE to read a previous interview with this wonderful lady about the WWG.) The WWG is from April 28th-May 1st, 2011 in Boerne (near San Antonio), Texas. This is a wonderful opportunity for our wounded heroes to find a respite and a place where they can be cared for.

If you're interested in learning more about this program, or if you think you might want to volunteer, click HERE. We can pray for those wounded warriors and the inspirational people who are making sacrifices for those who sacrificed so much for us.

If you'd like to meet some heroes in the military right now and share a cup of coffee with them (and maybe become pen pals!), you might be interested in checking out the Cup of Joe for a Joe program. I highly recommend it!

There are many ways we can show our military men and women we care. Let's remember their sacrificial love and find a way to show our love to them, as well!

And now, here's a listing of the other blogs participating in the party that are posting today:

(Remember to sign up here if you are one of those bloggers!)

Also, I'm over at The Borrowed Book today talking about devotion to your manuscript (keeping a writing schedule), so if you're interested, I'd love to have you visit!

Again, Happy Valentine's Day!

Season of Love Blog Party with MaryLu Tyndall!

Welcome to the first day of the "Season of Love Blog Party!" I'm so happy to be one of the hostesses of this week-long celebration of Valentine's Day!

Today author MaryLu Tyndall is helping us start this party off with a bang! Please give her a warm welcome, and read all the way through to see how you can win a copy of her upcoming March 2011 release.

Amber:
Thank you so much for joining us today, MaryLu! To start, could you share with us your own love story and how that might have influenced your writing?

MaryLu: Wow, no one has ever asked me that! I found love late in life. Unfortunately, I rushed into marriage at a very young age and had two kids before I even realized that I had married the wrong guy. I wasn’t a Christian then, so my marriage fell apart and I ended up being a single mom for several years. Dating became almost impossible. Believe me, most men out there want nothing to do with a woman who comes with kids! So, I met a lot of losers and started a few relationships that went sour. Finally in my early 30’s, I had almost given up on finding my prince charming. Then I met my husband. He was a Harley-riding scientist at the company where I worked at the time. Tall, handsome, intelligent, successful and romantic. Wow, I fell madly in love within the first few weeks of dating. We married a year later and have been together for almost 20 years. I still get goose bumps when he walks in the front door.

How does my own personal romance influence my writing? Honestly, I don’t think you can write romance unless you’ve experienced true love. You can watch it in movies, read it in books, but unless you’ve felt that tingling in your belly or that hot flush race through you at the sight of him, unless you’ve felt as though your life would end without that person, how can you describe that in a story? Also aside from those wonderful feelings, being married so long has given me a perspective of what real love is about—a love that abides through time, struggles, heartaches, and trials and only comes out stronger.

Amber: Wow! Thank you so much for sharing that with us!

What inspired you to write Christian romance books?

MaryLu: My faith is very important to me, so when I write a story, I don’t want to just entertain people (although I strive to do that, as well), but I want to share the love of God with them. Writing Christian romance gives me a chance to tell the world through the use of story how real and wonderful and awesome God truly is.

Amber: I completely agree!

I have to say, there’s just something about the wide, mysterious sea (and handsome pirates!) that is very romantic. What do you enjoy most about writing seafaring books? Do you think that an exotic setting leads to a more intriguing romance story?

MaryLu: Like you said, there’s something so adventurous, so romantic about the sea! I’ve been obsessed with it since I was a young girl growing up on the beaches of South Florida. I suppose it’s the unknown, the adventure, the risk that draws me. Battles have been fought at sea, new worlds discovered, and men have sailed it for centuries in search of freedom and adventure. I suppose I love to write seafaring stories for all of those reasons. There seems to be no boundaries to the excitement that can happen out at sea. Does an exotic location help create a better story? Not necessarily. You must start with great characters and a great plot. But, an alluring setting can certainly add flavor to a great story like whipped cream on a scrumptious piece of cake.

Amber: Yum! ;) What’s next in your writing career?

MaryLu: I’m in the middle of a series entitled "Surrender to Destiny" about finding God’s destiny for your life. The series is set in Baltimore during the War of 1812. Very exciting stuff! Surrender the Night releases next month, and Surrender the Dawn releases in August. You can find out more information at my website: http://www.mltyndall.com

Next, I’m working on a single title, Veil of Pearls, set in Charleston South Carolina in the early 1800s. The story is about a runaway slave who falls in love with a spoiled son of a plantation owner.

Amber: Can't wait to read more of your books! Now, do you have a favorite Valentine’s Day memory you could tell us about?

MaryLu: Walking, arm in arm with my husband, down the beach in Southern California as we watched the sun set. It’s the simple times that you will remember the most. The quiet moments just enjoying each other’s company.

Amber: *Sigh.* Sounds lovely!

Thank you so much for joining us today, MaryLu, and happy (almost) Valentine's Day to you and and your husband!

Readers, here's your chance to win a copy of Surrender the Night!

Leave a comment for MaryLu along with your e-mail address, and you'll be entered in a drawing for a copy of Surrender the Night. Everyone can enter! The winner will be announced on Monday, February 14th (Valentine's Day!). Once the winner has been determined, I'll pre-order a copy of the book and have it sent to the person once the book releases on March 1, 2011.

Also, if you have a moment and you're interested in some tips for writers, today my first post in a 3-part series is up on "The Borrowed Book" blog. You can check it out HERE!
