Welcome to "grand central station" for the Contentment Reading Challenge 2013! Here's where you can sign up for the challenge, catch up on the challenge posts, and read about the history and details of the challenge. I'm glad you're here!
~ A Brief History ~
I started the Contentment Reading Challenge in 2011. Here's a bit of what I wrote in the introductory blog post:
"I don't know if there are any rules for creating reading challenges, and I don't know if my reading challenge is really that unique, but the 'Contentment Reading Challenge' I'm hosting is one that is based on something I need to work on in my life--being content with what I have. It's a struggle for sure, but I truly have so much to be thankful for! In light of eternity, all of the 'stuff' I have has no lasting value in and of itself. If the stories I read turn me to God and remind me of His truths, then they have value in that sense."
I had a lot of fun putting together the challenge posts that year, which included hosting book swaps and interacting with friends regarding the books we re-read. You can see all of the challenge posts for 2011 HERE.
Unfortunately, I didn't actually end up re-reading much myself - only 3 books, all in the same great series ("Legacy of the King's Pirates" by MaryLu Tyndall). Here are some of my concluding thoughts from the end of the year:
"I think, if anything, this challenge has reminded me of how much I have to be grateful for and how very much I have yet to learn about contentment. It's a humbling reality, and I know I still have a long way to go. I have been blessed with an abundant reading supply, and yet I'm constantly thinking about what's next. I need to enjoy what I'm reading right now and be thankful for the stories that have blessed me in the past - and maybe re-visit more of those dear friends!"
I didn't participate in the challenge in 2012, but I'm so pleased that Katie from Legacy of a Writer was willing to host the challenge last year! You can see her initial challenge post HERE. Huge thanks to Katie for taking the time to continue the challenge!
Due to a very busy schedule, Katie passed the challenge back over to me, and I'm excited for the chance to host it this year!
~ Some Inspiration ~
"But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out.... Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy."
1 Timothy 6:6-7, 17 (KJV)
~ Rules of the Challenge ~
Some of us are book reviewers; I assume all of us are bookworms if we're participating in a reading challenge! In other words, we generally read a lot. In my own experience, I've discovered that it's easy to get caught up in always thinking about what's coming next: What new books will be delivered to me this week? What new books will I want to request to read? And so on and so forth!
The purpose of this challenge is to remind ourselves of the blessings we've already discovered. We'll re-visit dear friends and find new things to love about the stories we once enjoyed. And hopefully we'll take a little step in fostering a general attitude of contentment in our lives.
~ Leave a comment here letting us know you'll be entering the challenge!
~ Choose the level you would like to accomplish in 2013. No worries if your initial target is too high or too low! But for the sake of this being a challenge, a goal is helpful. ;) If you'd prefer to set your own numerical goal, that's totally fine! You can just state it in your comment. (I believe the water theme of the challenge levels came from a tie-in with my "Sundays by the Sea" devotional posts, which I wrote in 2010 and 2011.)
- Floating: Skimming the surface ~ re-reading 5 books you already own.
- Wading: Getting your feet wet ~ re-reading 10 books you already own.
- Swimming: Immersing yourself again ~ re-reading 15 books you already own.
- Diving: Going deep into the stories you love ~ re-reading 20 books you already own.
~ If you don't have a blog, you can keep track of your progress in the comments section here on this page or on the individual challenge posts.
~ The challenge officially starts on January 1st, 2013 and officially ends on December 29th, 2013. (I will hopefully have a final wrap-up post on December 30th or thereabouts!)
~ Remember that, like the pirates code in Pirates of the Caribbean, these are "more like guidelines than actual rules." The important thing is the heart attitude, not the numbers. =)
